MALACCA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called on Malaysia and Indonesia to trace the "demons" who are trying to strain the close ties between the two countries.

These people should be identified so that they could be stopped from their irrational bashing of Malaysia over trivial and baseless issues, the Prime Minister said.

"Let both countries identify them for the betterment of our bilateral ties," he said when addressing the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam convention here yesterday.

The Malaysian embassy in Jakarta continues to be targeted for demonstrations since Wednesday by a group known as Laskar Merah Putih (LMP), who claimed Malaysia had illegally taken over 1,000ha of Indonesian land in northern Kalimantan.

Bernama reported that about 70 LMP members, who gathered with banners and hurled abusive slogans outside the embassy, tried to put an Indonesian flag on the gate but were stopped by the police.

The leader of the group, Adek Erfil Manurung, handed a note to a security personnel at the gate and announced that there would be a bigger demonstration on Oct 28.

On Wednesday, a group calling itself Forum Betawi Rempug and numbering about 650 people hurled objects at the guard post and perimeter lighting and also at the police.

The Indonesian Parliament's defence and foreign affairs commission deputy head Maj Gen (Rtd) T.B. Hasanuddin had told the local media that Indonesia had lost 1,490ha in Camar Bulan to Malaysia and that the country's sea boundary in Tanjung Datu waters had moved 800m in favour of Kuala Lumpur.

However, several Indonesian Cabinet ministers had rejected the lawmaker's claim that Malaysia had "illegally taken over" the land.

Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Malaysia was often used as a punching bag by certain quarters in Indonesia whenever a political issue surfaces in the republic.

The demonstration outside the Malaysian embassy could have been staged to draw the attention of certain quarters to problems they were facing, he said.

"The problems are internal but we, Malaysians, are the ones targeted," he said.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Malaysian students in Indonesia have been advised not to react to provocations over the issue.

The education attache at the embassy, Ludinata Misnun, assured parents that the safety of Malaysian students was being monitored.

In PUTRAJAYA, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman attributed the demonstration to "cheap politicking".

Bernama quoted him as saying that the Malaysia-Indonesia border issues should not have arisen because there had been no trespassing by Malaysia in the area stated.
